An accident occurred Friday evening in Oxnard, where a pedestrian was struck by an oncoming vehicle. The person was later identified as Ventura County Supervisor Carmen Ramirez. She was rushed to a nearby hospital, but doctors could not save her life.
The truck hit Carmen Ramirez, resulting in her tragic death
Carmen Ramirez, who was the chairwoman of the Ventura County Board of Supervisors, was hit by an oncoming pickup truck in Oxnard on Friday, August 12, 2022. The unfortunate accident happened around 6:40 pm in the area of Seventh and A streets, according to Oxnard Police.
The 2020 GMC Sierra truck was driven by a 38-year-old man who remained at the scene and did not attempt to escape. He cooperated with authorities and investigators. Police said the driver was westbound on Seventh Street toward A Street when the crash occurred.
Ramirez was crossing the intersection in the crosswalk, but was unable to avoid the collision in time. She was rushed to Ventura County Medical Center and admitted to an emergency room. However, she did not survive and the doctor pronounced her dead at 19:17.

Ventura County announced on its official Twitter account the tragic news of the death of Carmen Ramirez.
“Our county mourns the loss of our board president Carmen Ramirez. Chair Ramirez was a pedestrian involved in a car accident in Oxnard and died this evening. We send our sincere condolences to her family, loved ones and her community in the city and county,” it said on Twitter.

Who was Carmen Ramirez?
Carmen Ramirez grew up in the San Gabriel Valley with six siblings and has worked in Ventura County since 1978. She was 73 years old. Her 2020 campaign website states she has served on the Oxnard City Council for over 10 years.
She was a resident of Oxnard and an attorney by profession. She served on the Oxnard City Council and the Ventura County Board of Supervisors as president this year.
About two years ago, Ramirez became the first Latina in county history to be elected supervisor in November 2020. She continued the accomplishment this year by becoming the first Latina to be elected by her fellow council members as board president responsible
Her colleagues praised her services as they paid tribute to the late president. Some of them also gathered at the hospital to mourn the loss.
Interim County Executive Sevet Johnson described her as “passionate” and “hardworking.” He also called Ramirez a great advocate on climate issues, as well as on behalf of her community and underserved populations.
“He was a big power,” Johnson said.
Supervisor Linda Parks also paid respects to the departed soul and offered praise to Ramirez. “We were all blessed to have known her, blessed to have been her friend,” she said.

Carmen Ramirez is survived by her husband, Roy Prince. Mr. Roy is an architect and design consultant by profession. Ramirez was predeceased by her brother Ricardo Ramirez.

Oxnard Mayor John Zaragoza called the crash “a tragic, tragic accident.” “It’s just devastating to the community,” he said. “We will miss her tremendously,” he said. The two worked together in the City Council for about 10 years.
