daily: Grain shipments from Ukraine are accelerating following a deal struck by Ukraine, Russia, Turkey and the United Nations in July. Russia’s blockade of Ukraine’s Black Sea ports has driven up food prices and raised fears of further famine in the Middle East and Africa. At least 18 ships loaded with wheat, corn and sunflower oil were sent to sea.
The fight: Conflicts on the ground may also provide strong resistance, with Russia taking advantage of heavy artillery to defeat Ukrainian forces. In the south, Ukraine’s hopes rest on liberating its Russian-held Kherson region and eventually its Russian-occupied Crimea in 2014. Fears of disaster at the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant remain as both sides blame each other for artillery fire.
weapon: Western arms supply helps Ukraine slow Russia’s advance. The US-supplied High Mobility Artillery Missile System (HIMARS) allows Ukrainian forces to engage Russian artillery further behind Russian lines. Russia has used a number of weapons against Ukraine, some of which have drawn the attention and concern of analysts.
