COLOMBIAN’s first division clash was halted on Wednesday after 1,400 fans stormed the pitch to ATTACK players and coaching staff.
Deportivo Cali, currently bottom of the first division table, traveled to the Doce de Octubre Stadium last night to face Cortulua.
The hosts scored the first goal of the game in the 20th minute thanks to a goal scored by Wilder Guisao before Feiver Mercado scored the three points.
But in the 81st minute, the game was stopped after many fans came out and entered the field.
Around 1,400 people gathered at the stadium, mostly fans of the Deportivo Cali team, and began verbally assaulting and torturing the players and staff.
The referee and most of the players fled the scene while some of them were shot.
Deportivo Cali striker Teófilo Gutiérrez struggled to escape after being punched and kicked by a group of angry fans.
Manager Mayer Candelo was also injured in the attacks.
Since then, Deportivo Cali has issued an official statement asking local authorities to intervene to prevent a similar incident from happening again in the future.
It said: “Ali Sports Association, Executive Committee, President Luis Fernando Mena, Professional Body, Managers and staff strongly reject the attacks, harassment and violence suffered by our team during the match against Cortulua.
“It clearly condemns any act of violence against our players and coaching staff.
“We respectfully request the government and sports authorities to intervene to prevent a future disaster for our sport.”
