COLUMBIA, SC – A 63-year-old worker died in a public restroom at a South Carolina mall, but his body was not found for four days, officials said.
Investigators said Bessie Durham, who worked for an outside company that cleaned the Belk store in Columbiana Center, was found dead Monday. The cleaning cart was outside the restroom.
Columbia Police Deputy Chief Melron Kelly said Durham was last seen at work Thursday and his body was found shortly after his family opened a missing person’s file. WIS TV.
The Lexington County Coroner’s Office said there was no indication anyone killed Durham or used drugs. An autopsy will be performed on Thursday to determine the cause of death.
Durham was seen on security camera going to the bathroom. It’s Thursday the 7th and it hasn’t come out. The coroner said his body was found around 8pm on Monday.
The store was open regularly for four days, and Kelly said police are investigating whether anyone was negligent.
“We’re still working with the store to find out what their processes are for closing the store, inspecting the store and so forth,” Kelly said.
In a company statement, it said Belk was helping authorities find out what happened and offered its deepest condolences to Durham’s family.
