Latest Pogba developments

French authorities are investigating Paul Pogba’s allegations of blackmail at gunpoint for $13 million involving the 29-year-old’s brother Mathias and several childhood friends, according to L’Equipe.

Paul Pogba’s claim is that a childhood friend who was staying with him in Manchester stole around $200,000, but then…Manchester United the player did not file a complaint at the time. Mathias now claims that he was an innocent cousin that Paul tried to deny.

L’Equipe also reports that authorities are considering whether Paul Pogba has painted a full picture of the motives behind the blackmail attempt with Mathias yet to respond to requests to clarify one of his recent quotes on Twitter: ” It’s not about the money. Meanwhile, the investigation continues. “We have material to analyse,” a source close to the investigation told L’Equipe. “We need to take some time to do some cross-checking. The fact that Paul Pogba has helped his childhood friends from time to time seems already established and there is no reason to doubt the reported events – especially the attempted extortion. He apparently believed that joining Juventus would allow him to escape his blackmailers. It was only when he saw them again in Turin that he alerted the club’s lawyers.”

Mathias’ wild claims

Mathias continues to make increasingly wild claims. “Hi everyone, what a crazy way to start the week!” he wrote in a lengthy Twitter update. “I have to say that a lot of people and the media have decided that Paul’s words must be the ultimate truth without verification just because he’s a star and that the guy who hasn’t had a great career should shut up. I know that some mock the truth because of their fanaticism towards the great Paul Pogba and that only the World Cup matters to others. Many would have turned a blind eye if Michael Jackson, MJ, had given us another Billie Jean,” his statement began, you know you’re in for a ride.

He went on to completely deny the allegations, saying: “All of Paul’s statements, from the hearing in early August – before my videos – to the response from his lawyers and his fans, were designed to smear my name. I wonder why they would rush to deal with what I had to say about witchcraft. Because it would be difficult to talk about the so-called blackmail?”

And then, of course, he turned his attention back to the witchcraft allegations, referring to reports that the Juventus superstar admitted to hiring a wizard but claimed it was to protect himself from injury.

“Consequently, the only path to survival is to expose his lies and deception. That is why I revealed the use of witchcraft because what matters here is not whether you believe in it or whether it works, more that it is malicious because these practices expect you to do bad things with the will to cause harm. Note that Paul denied using sorcerers, so why did he reveal this to the investigator? “Pogba admitted to police that he paid a sorcerer in his entourage to protect him from injury”” he wrote on Twitter, citing Franceinfo.

“Injury protection costing millions over the years (especially since it didn’t work)? Investigators and tax authorities will be able to check this with the Central Bank of London. Also trying to discredit everyone who knows his little secrets, Paul claims that the money he gave to his childhood friends was embezzled, which is easy for the media to tell.

“If this money is justified by official documents, saved and proof of an agreement? It’s definitely not the same thing. In any case, I am glad to be supported through this ordeal and I am very grateful to my older brothers and those who believed in me. In closing, bear with me as the reveal of the lies and my own version of the facts comes!”

The reaction in France

Mathias Pogba previously played for third-tier side Tours FC and chairman Jean-Marc Ettori told Le Figaro that he is not at all surprised by the current scandal involving the two brothers. “It was offered to us, but we all said no thanks. FC Nantes Head coach Antoine Kombouare has been vocal in his support for Paul Pogba and admitted France boss Didier Deschamps has a decision to make on the situation: “It disgusts me to see all this unfold in public,” he said. “It’s complicated for all the players, whether it’s family or the first circle of agents and advisers. You can’t imagine the pressure. I really feel sorry for guys like Paul and all the players. I’ve been in this game for 40 years and I’ve seen it evolve.

“Families are more and more present. It’s hard for the players, so we try to protect them. We don’t know everything, though. When you make that much money, there are so many eagles circling. These are also private matters and it’s about being strong enough that I think he has the stature to handle it. It’s up to Paul to come back stronger and I think Didier will help him – if he can.”

French Football Federation president Noel Le Graet also suggested the issue could affect Paul Pogba’s future with Les Bleus. “This is just the beginning and nothing is in court as far as I know. At the moment, these are just rumours. i love paul I hope it doesn’t put his future in question.”
