The formation of Rabithah Alawiyah went through a long process. However, it is better if we explore its history since the Arabs entered Indonesia.

Indeed, people from the Arabs have long entered the archipelago, which is as far back as the 7th century AD. But this does not mean that they are all descendants of the Prophet Muhammad.

Meanwhile, Indonesians are familiar with the nickname “habib” for several important figures of Arab origin.

Not a few believe that those who are called by the greeting of habib are descendants of the Prophet Muhammad.

Sayyid is a greeting for the descendants of Prophet Muhammad SAW’s grandson Husein bin Ali.

Sharif is a greeting for the descendants of Prophet Muhammad’s grandson, Hasan bin Ali. For women, the greeting is Sayyidah or Syarifah.

The descendants of Husein and Hasan are called Bani Alawiyin. The Bani Alawiyin that first entered Indonesia is descended from Ahmad bin Isa “Al-Muhajir” who previously emigrated from Basra to Hadramaut, Yemen.

The Bani Alawiyin sailed from the Sila Islands, Philippines and spread Islam and formed colonies to the archipelago.

There are also those who entered Indonesia through Aceh. In the 15th century, the process of collecting genealogical data from Bani Alawiyin was started by Sheikh Ali bin Abubakar As Sakran.

The registration of Bani Alawiyin descendants was also carried out by Habib Alwi bin Thahir Alhaddad, who later founded the Rabithah Alawiyah organization in Indonesia.

In Rabithah Alawiyah first, Maktab Daimi was formed to find out the lineage of a descendant of Prophet Muhammad SAW.

This Daimi Maktab plays an important role in ensuring a person’s lineage. An example is Habib Rizieq Shihab, who is the 39th descendant.

The registration system is indeed strict so that no one can claim to be a descendant of the prophet. The genealogy was recorded in Syajarah Assabah Al Asyraf Alalawiyyin.

Shaykh Muhammad Asy Syuhumi Al Idrisi, Chairman of the Advisory Council and Scientific Authority of the International Federation of Libyan Sufism said that Rabithah Alawiyah in Indonesia is the best of all institutions that record the descendants of the Prophet Muhammad.
