A 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck Mexico, killing at least one person

A magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck western Mexico on Thursday morning, killing at least one person and destroying an unknown number of buildings.

The European Seismological Center (EMSC) initially reported that the earthquake hit the state of Michoacán in southwestern Mexico. However, Mexico City was also affected more than 100 miles away, where deaths were reported.

Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed the death on Twitter early Thursday morning.

The politician said that one person died in an accident in the neighborhood of the colonial doctors in the capital. The victim was allegedly hit on the head while falling down the stairs of her home.

Fear-stricken people living in the Roma Sur neighborhood of Mexico City are reported to have run out of buildings with their pajamas and blankets, as the earthquake alarm was heard.

The US Tsunami Warning System has not issued a tsunami warning, meaning the quake is not expected to cause a tsunami.

Thursday’s earthquake followed a powerful 7.6-magnitude earthquake that struck Mexico City on September 19 – a day many Mexicans are feeling unlucky.

Mexico experienced three major earthquakes on September 19, 1985, 2017 and 2022. This event has reportedly caused concern for many people, as the 2017 earthquake claimed more than 200 lives.

According to the modified Mercalli Intensity Scale – a scale that measures the intensity of earthquakes – 6 is considered “strong” and 7 is “very strong”.

Both dimensions make it difficult to stand and have the potential to collapse plaster and break chimneys, according to the US Geological Survey.

The extent of the damage depends on how well the structures are made. There is no information yet on how many buildings were destroyed.
